Current Network-sponsored Initiatives and Featured Events

The Franklin County Prevention Network develops and supports initiatives to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among youth. Many of our projects focus on environmental prevention strategies that can impact a large segment of the population. Please contact us if you would like to join our Network or learn more about these projects.

PARENTING TIP ADS

The Franklin County Prevention Network (FCPN) collaborated with our media partner, Columbus Parent Magazine, to run a year-long parenting campaign during 2007, How To Keep Your Kids Free of Drugs.

The ads are entitled:

Rule #1. Understand Why.
Rule #7. Educate Yourself.
Rule #2. Take a Stand.
Rule #8. Get Involved.
Rule #3. Listen.
Rule #9. Set Limits.
Rule #4. Set the Rules.
Rule #10. Don’t Preach.
Rule #5. Start Early.
Rule #11. Ask Questions.
Rule #6. Know the Facts.
Rule #12. Keep Talking.

With a circulation of over 65,000 magazines each month, Columbus Parent Magazine provided another way to help educate parents. KNOW! was a collaborator and created four of the 12 ads. Handbooks were distributed to forty-five readers who responded to the offer in the ads.

The ads were provided by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and are available through the Network, by request.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ARTICLES –

At Franklin County Prevention Network’s request, KNOW! developed four articles to be sent electronically to more than 70 Franklin County middle schools for publication in their school newsletters. The articles will be sent during Spring and Fall 2008. The articles are based on the series entitled: WHAT OUR KIDS ARE SAYING ABOUT… and address these issues:

  • Parents’ Influence on Adolescent Drug Use
    Driving Under the Influence
When and Where They Drink Alcohol
How Many of Their Peers Drink and Smoke

KNOW! (a program of Drug-Free Action Alliance), the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Consortium and the FCPN collaborated on this project to keep parents up-to-date. The topics, taken from the PPAAUS 2006 data, were researched and reported by Kenny Steinman, PhD, Assistant Professor, the Ohio State University College of Public Health. Dr. Steinman is a member of the FCPN.

PPAAUS

Franklin County’s triennial survey, the Primary Prevention Attitude Awareness and Use Survey, has been administered by the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Consortium since 1988. The Network is a funding partner, along with the Columbus Medical Association Foundation, United Way of Central Ohio, and the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health (ADAMH) Board of Franklin County. The survey provides the Network, schools and community groups with snapshots and trends of our youths' attitudes and behaviors and provides data that guide programming for youth. The survey asks about such issues as drug use, respect, bullying/other negative behaviors and school climate.

PEDIATRICIAN CAMPAIGN

The Network is creating a brochure for parents, to be distributed through Franklin County pediatricians’ offices. The aim of the brochure is motivating parents to take the initiative in talking with their children about the harms of alcohol and other drug use before their children even consider experimentation.

Our Network partner, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will assist in distribution of the brochure.
